OMD: custom SCADA, PLC programs and machine vision

OMD delivers automation to manufacturers; we write the software behind it. Custom SCADA systems in C#, PLC programs for ABB, Saia Burgess Controls (SBC), Siemens and Crestron controllers, and visual inspection stations built on Cognex cameras.

The work

OMD builds automation for production lines and buildings, and we are the software side of those projects. The work falls into three kinds, often within the same installation.

Custom SCADA in C#

Most of what we write for OMD is SCADA software built to order in C#. Off-the-shelf packages fit a standard plant; these systems are written around one particular line or building, so the operator sees exactly the process in front of them and the data is logged in the form the customer’s engineers want to analyse it in. Values are read from the controllers over OPC and Modbus, stored, and shown as live visualisations.

PLC programming

The logic that has to run in the controller is written there. We program ABB and Saia Burgess Controls (SBC) PLCs, and others where the site calls for them, including Siemens and Crestron. Working on both sides of the boundary — the controller and the SCADA application above it — means the interface between the two is designed once, by the same people.

Visual inspection with Cognex cameras

Where a part has to be checked rather than measured, we build vision systems on Cognex cameras: the camera inspects each item on the line and the result goes to the control system, which accepts or rejects it. We have also delivered vision tooling on Teledyne Dalsa hardware.

Selected projects

  • Norma Vision Tool — machine vision on Cognex, 2016
  • PKC ATO + Power box — machine vision on Teledyne Dalsa, 2016
  • Norma OPC Logger — 2016
  • Flexa Modbus logging and visualisation — 2016
  • PKCRobot application — 2017
  • ABB Building Automation Data Logger — 2017
